Boxing Day shopping hours won't expand in Manitoba after the provincial government rejected a request from the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce. Since Boxing Day falls on a Sunday this year, the Winnipeg chamber had asked that businesses be allowed to extend their hours beyond the noon to 6 p.m. limit in place for Sundays. The chamber argued that Boxing Day accounts for a sizable portion of retail sales, but the province wouldn't budge, saying the existing laws are suitable. "After consulting with business and citizens, we found that there was no clear consensus for change from the public or from business," said Labour Minister Nancy Allan in a press statement.
