The wheels are in motion and the dollars in place for Flin Flon’s next major homecoming celebration.
City council on Tuesday voted to provide $10,000 in seed money for a homecoming planned for late June and early July of 2017.
“The [organizing] committee is excited and the city’s excited about having a homecoming,” said Coun. Karen MacKinnon, who made the motion.
The committee includes city recreation manager Mike Dubreuil as chair and Coun. Colleen McKee as vice-chair. The homecoming will mark Canada’s 150th birthday.
Council has decided that any dollars generated by the event will go toward funding potential upgrades to the Aqua Centre.
Flin Flon’s last homecoming in 2008 drew hundreds of out-of-towners to mark the community’s 75th anniversary. A homecoming was also held in 2000 to mark the dawn of a new millennium.
