Jonathon Naylor Editor Some city council decisions are fraught with controversy while others are generally seen as no-brainers. Chalk one up for the latter category after council approved construction of a brand new home in Channing. By unanimous vote at their meeting last week, council endorsed a variation to their usual lot requirements to allow a new home to go up at 5 Jones Square. This came at the request of Carrie and Tyler Stinton, who were eager to tear down their existing home in favour of a new one. Council also varied the lot requirements at 506 Phelps Avenue to authorize the construction of a new garage. Highlights Other highlights from last week's council meeting: Council voted to purchase a 2010 pick-up truck from Northland Ford for $25,682 plus taxes. The money will come from the Equipment Reserve Fund. Council voted to donate $1,000 to this year's Canada Day fireworks display, with Coun. Bill Hanson commenting there was a "heck of a show" last year. Council approved the donation of $336 for the recent regional swim meet hosted by the Aqua Jets at the Aqua Centre. The donation consists of time, not actual cash. Council had no comment on letters asking them to have the RCMP step up the enforcement of speed limits near schools, and to install "school zone" signage near the schools by Sept. 6. The letters, from Flin Flon Superintendent of Schools Blaine Veitch, were referred to the Traffic Commission for further discussion. Mayor George Fontaine praised the Flin Flon Community Choir for its recent production of Fiddler on the Roof, saying it required "terrific dedication" and made the city proud. "We want to be the arts centre of the North," he said, adding that with shows of this nature, this goal is being realized.
