A crowd at First United Lutheran Church got into the holiday spirit in more ways than one yesterday afternoon. Not only did they enjoy Christmas carols performed by local musical talent, they also generously brought with them food and monetary donations for people in need this season. All food items and proceeds from the special concert, entitled "See, Amid the Winter's Snow," will go to the Lord's Bounty Food Bank. Tim Spencer, an organizer, said the two musical groups involved with the concert, The Coppertones and Borealis, were happy to entertain the community while helping those in need. "We just felt that we'd like to do something that was more for the community and something that was free for all to attend," he said. The concert included hymns, timeless carols and Biblical lessons related to the Christmas season. Guest readers included representatives from the three area municipalities, the food bank and different churches. Interestingly, the concert marked the North American debut of Nicholas Burt's new arrangement of the traditional carol "Ding Ding Merrily on the High." Spencer e-mailed Burt, an England resident, and secured permission to perform the piece for the first time on this continent.
