The number of new cases of HIV in Saskatchewan continues to decline.
Provincially, there were 177 new HIV cases in 2012, a five per cent decrease from 2011.
The number of new HIV cases has been falling since 2009, even though the number of HIV tests performed has gone up 23 per cent since the same year, prior to the release of the province’s HIV strategy in 2010.
“We are very encouraged by the downward trend in new cases,” HIV Provincial Leadership Team Medical Health Officer Dr. Johnmark Opondo said. “We are committed to continue efforts to reduce HIV rates in our province, increase the number of people who know their HIV status, and engage people in care.”
A collaborative and co-ordinated approach to HIV continues through partnerships that include regional health authorities, community-based organizations, First Nations, people living with or affected by HIV, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada, the Ministry of Health, and other ministries.
