Cases of COVID-19 are rising fast once again in Saskatchewan, but while the province reported its highest number of new cases in a month Sunday, active cases in northern communities may be starting to slowing down.

Twenty more people tested positive for the disease as of June 21, according to provincial health officials. Out of the 20 new cases, 18 are located in southern Saskatchewan. The remaining two are in the far north. The total from June 21 is the highest number of new cases in a day since May 21, when 21 new cases were reported.

The news comes days after the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) announced an outbreak tied to a pair of Hutterite communities in southwest Saskatchewan where at least 16 cases were found. It is unknown if any of the new cases in southern Saskatchewan have been tied to this outbreak.

Since May 22, cases of COVID-19 in northern Saskatchewan have dropped to almost half their former state, going from 91 previously to 46 as of June 21. Active cases in the north dropped to as low as seven earlier this month before a second outbreak was reported in the far north.

Four more people have recovered from the disease.

Out of 88 total active cases, 44 are in the far north and two more are in northern Saskatchewan. Total cases reported in far north Saskatchewan have gone over 300, with 301 total cases now reported from the region.

Manitoba did not provide updated information on COVID-19 over the weekend.
