With the school year more or less half over, grade 12 students are beginning to savour their high school experience. In a little over five months from now, they will don a cap and gown and be handed a key to their future Ñ their diplomas. In the neighbourhood of 200 students are expected to graduate this June from Hapnot Collegiate, Many Faces Education Centre, Frontier Collegiate in Cranberry Portage and Joseph H. Kerr School in Snow Lake. Hapnot Collegiate The largest area high school has a potential for 101 graduates this year, a slight drop of last year's total of 109. To raise money for their convocation, the graduating students have sold chocolates and organized a successful Christmas tea. Upcoming fundraisers include the ever popular Dinner Theatre production, set for February 20 and 21, and the Fashion Show, slated for the middle of May. The graduation committee is expected to select its valedictorian and guest speaker at a meeting next month. It is hoped they will have chosen a graduation song by that time as well. The Hapnot Collegiate graduation ceremony is slated for Tuesday, June 29 at the Whitney Forum. The ceremony will be followed by the grand march down Main Street and a safe grad celebration. Many Faces Education Centre When Many Faces was established in 1992, no one expected it would one day boast graduating classes of between 40 and 50 students. But that's just how many graduates principal Jane Dupre expects will don a cap and gown this June. See 'Fundraisers' P.# Con't from P.# The Many Faces Graduation Committee has been meeting once every two weeks to discuss everything from fundraisers to special touches to make the grad ceremony that much more memorable. The students have had 50/50 tickets printed up, with the raffle to take place in March. The students' largest fundraiser will take place in May when they host a car wash and flea market at the school. Grad pictures are scheduled for February 19 and 20. The grad committee plans to select their valedictorian and guest speaker by the end of March. The Many Faces Education Centre graduation ceremony is slated for Monday, June 28 at the R.H. Channing Auditorium. Last year, a record 52 students graduated from Many Faces. Frontier Collegiate Staff at Cranberry Portage's high school expect about 35 graduates this year, up slightly over last year. As usual, the valedictorian will be selected based on academic performance. Whichever graduate obtains the highest grade point average in grade 12 will be given the honour. The students have yet to decide whether they will have a guest speaker. The students have already held a successful pizza sale at the school to raise money for their graduation ceremony. Further fundraising in the form of another pizza sale or a canteen may take place in March. They may also consider a raffle. Graduates will again hail from various small communities throughout the northern part of the province. They come from Moose Lake, Easterville, St. Theresa Point, Garden Hill, God's Lake Narrows, Poplar River, Barrens River, Brochet, South Indian Lake and Pukatawagan, to name a few. The Frontier Collegiate graduation ceremony is slated for Saturday, June 26 at the school's gymnasium. A safe grad celebration is expected to follow. Joseph H. Kerr School Twenty-one students are expected to be handed their diplomas from Snow Lake's school this June. The graduates will hear from not one, but two valedictorians, with Kari Assoignon and Riley Eastman sharing the honour. The graduating students have selected high school language arts teacher John Kerr as their guest speaker. Fundraising has been going well. The students have already sold food and ornaments to raise money and now have a raffle to be drawn on February 13. The Joseph H. Kerr School graduation ceremony is slated for Saturday, June 19 in the school's gymnasium. A grand march in the school yard and a social at the Laurie Marsh Community Hall will follow.1/20/2004
