Northern volleyball players recently gave cancer a swift kick in the you-know-what.

Athletes from Hapnot Collegiate, Creighton Community School, Margaret Barbour Collegiate and Swan Valley Regional Secondary School took part in a friendly tournament and fundraiser called Kick the Cancer.

Shawn Manning, a Churchill teacher, started Kick the Cancer as a way to contribute to cancer research after his wife, Lisa, battled thyroid cancer.

Schools all over Manitoba now host Kick the Cancer sporting events, where young athletes collect funds to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Hapnot’s JV volleyball coach Amy Olenick says the tournament was a great opportunity for local players to get extra practice on the court, while also contributing to a good cause.

Hapnot volleyball players collected pledges for donations before the tournament, and visitors to the games also contributed to a silver collection.

In total, $734.95 was raised for the Canadian Cancer Society from the Kick the Cancer event, held at Hapnot the weekend of October 9.
