Hapnot Collegiate will continue a multicultural approach to learning by offering a Cree language course for the first time this new school year. Superintendent of Schools Blaine Veitch is excited about the opportunity for students to learn about a language and culture with strong roots in the region. "Language is a key part of the culture, so you can't really separate the two," he said. "When you learn the language, you also learn about the culture." Superintendent Veitch believes knowledge in Cree will be a useful tool for the students when they enter the workforce. The course comes in response to requests from a number of students who let it be known that Cree would be an appealing subject to them. "It's a big part of the culture of the North and we want to be able to support language development in Cree," said Hapnot principal John Clark. Taught by area resident Jan Lentowicz, the course will be offered at the grade 9 level this year, but Clark said it may be part of the grade 10 timetable next year if there is sufficient interest. Enrollment currently stands at 20 students, and it's not too late for interested pupils to enroll. "We have a mixture of students in the class, which is important because our school is looking at it from a multiculturalism approach," said Clark. Classes at Hapnot and the four other Flin Flon schools ? Many Faces, Ruth Betts, Parkdale and McIsaac ? start this Wednesday, Sept. 8. In a related note, residents can expect to find the Flin Flon School Division's 2003-04 annual report in their mailboxes this weekend. Anyone who does not receive a copy may contact the division office.
