Hard work paid off for eight students at Creighton Community School as the Lieutenant Governor Award was handed out along with the Student Achievement Awards.
Taylor Kryschuk accepted the Lieutenant Governor Award from Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield Monday morning at a school assembly.
Kryschuk, now a Grade 12 student, was told she won the award in May, based on her performance in Grade 11. She earned an average of 90 per cent.
“I was very excited,” says Kryschuk. “I remember seeing the award ceremony when I was younger and I always thought it would be a really neat thing to win.”
The lieutenant governor made her third trip to Creighton for the ceremony as she presented awards to six of the eight winners present.
The Lieutenant Governor Award recipient is chosen based on overall academics within each district in Saskatchewan.
“It’s very special for me,” said Schofield. “I know the [students] work hard all year. It’s a bit of a competition in the district as to which schools will win the awards.
“It’s nice to come to a school like Creighton, where [I am] coming back and [I] know everybody.”
Kryschuk was one of eight students to be recognized during Monday’s ceremony, and one of a dozen community members to receive recognition.
The lieutenant governor also called upon five veterans and a retired Mountie from Creighton and Denare Beach to receive service pins for their service in the military or RCMP.
Schofield presented Doug Gibson with a pin for his service in the Second World War and his time in the 14th Field regiment.
Jean Champagne received his pin for his time in the reserves as captain in Flin Flon from 1977 to 1990 as well as the 38th Brigade while stationed in Winnipeg.
Maurice Beauchamp was awarded his pin for his time in the reserves as a captain in Flin Flon for many years.
Doug Gourlay Sr accepted his pin for his time served in the Second World War in the United Kingdom, Canada and northwest Europe.
The final veteran honoured was Clarence Kitson.
Carl Lentowitz was honoured for 32 years with the RCMP. He has been the mayor of Denare Beach since 1997.
Student achievements
Schofield also presented five students with Student Achievement Awards.
Based on last year’s performances, Jason McDermott received the award for Grade 7, Aline Nasselquist for Grade 8, Bradley Fox and Tianna Angel for Grade 9, Tyler Williamson for Grade 11, and Brie and Kyla Phillips for Grade 12.
“It’s a reward for hard work and I think it’s well deserved,” said Schofield.
