Here’s why you should get outside before it gets any colder

With a gentle slide into winter temps this year, December has been a blissful month for those who dread the arrival of those -20°C to -40°C days. Here are a few fun ways to keep active and enjoy the relatively balmy weather – while it lasts! 1.

With a gentle slide into winter temps this year, December has been a blissful month for those who dread the arrival of those -20°C to -40°C days.

Here are a few fun ways to keep active and enjoy the relatively balmy weather – while it lasts!

1. Go night skiing at the Flin Flon Ski Club. The 2.3 km Valley Loop is well lit, and open from 4 to 10 pm every evening. Let the day’s stresses fall away as you enjoy the stars, the trees, and the swish-swish of your skis. Non-members are welcome - just drop off a $10 trail fee in the club’s outdoor collection box.

2. Do you want to build a snowman? What about a snow monster, or a complex Calvin-and-Hobbes-inspired snow scene? Singing of Frozen tunes during construction is highly encouraged.

3. Dig out that toboggan and hit the slopes. Some favourites with local kids – and kids at heart – include Kinsmen Park on Green Street or the hill adjacent to École McIsaac School in Flin Flon. In Creighton, Red Mountain Park or Bereskin Park are popular spots, as are the end of Fourth Avenue or the former Beaver Lake Day grounds in Denare Beach. Remember to use caution, and scope the area for icy spots and rocks before heading down the hill.

4. Go for a peaceful trail walk. Try Flinty’s Boardwalk and Flinty’s Trail, the Community Connection Walking Path between Flin Flon and Creighton, or relish in the wooded stillness at Bakers Narrows Provincial Park. Want a furry companion? The Flin Flon Creighton SPCA is always looking for volunteer dog-walkers.

5. Get outside and play in the snow. Make an angel initiate a friendly snowball fight, or, if you’re feeling really ambitious, build a snow shelter like an igloo or quinzee.
