Jonathon Naylor Editor Flin Flon City Council is asking the province to help rebuild a stretch of roadway near the new water treatment plant. Council has applied for 50 per cent funding to replace the storm sewer beneath, and repave and install new curbs on, a section of Oak Avenue. The work would begin about halfway down Oak and continue on to the intersection with Aspen Grove. The city considers the current storm sewer there to be undersized and antiquated. The proposed new storm sewer will have a larger capacity and tie into new piping installed as part of the water treatment plant and a 2009 project that brought new feeder mains in from Cliff Lake. The project would also include a new road base, curbs and asphalt once the storm sewer is installed. The city estimates the total cost will come in at $180,000. It's now up to the province to decide whether it will pick up half of the tab, $90,000. At their meeting last week, city council voted to apply for the funding through Manitoba's Grant-in-Aid program. Council also applied for 50 per cent provincial funding to complete the resurfacing of the gravel Company Road between Channing and Saskatchewan. Last year, the vast majority of the project was completed as crews covered the road between the railway tracks and the Saskatchewan border with thick limestone. They also dug out the soft spots in the road, filling them with rock. The overall budget for the project was an estimated $210,000, but it came in significantly under budget. Last year's cost was split three ways between the city, the Manitoba government and Preferred Sands, a company that regularly uses the road.
