Heavy equipment, children and road ‘not a safe mix’

Some Channing residents want heavy-duty trucks and equipment banned from approaching their newest pride and joy.

Some Channing residents want heavy-duty trucks and equipment banned from approaching their newest pride and joy.

City council is being asked to bar such vehicles from Freedman Street and Desjarlais Lane, the single gravel road near the subdivision’s reborn beach and playground.

“In addition to the increased traffic, noise and dust they create, there is a real danger to the individuals, families and pets that enjoy the Channing beach and park on a daily basis,” wrote Dennis and Melody Borschewski in a letter to council.

The couple wrote that the area around the beach and park is extremely busy and that the addition of industrial traffic “is not a safe mix for anyone.”

Semis

The Borschewskis wrote that semis, dump trucks, graders, plows and front-end loaders have been using the road as a shortcut to or from the Flin Flon landfill and other destinations.

The vehicles belong to both the City of Flin Flon and several businesses, read the letter.

The Borschewskis suggested council place vehicle weight restrictions on Freedman and Desjarlais or simply limit access to local traffic and pedestrians.

“I understand this is a busy time of year for the City but do respectfully request your attention to this issue to help prevent a possible accident or injury,” the couple added.

After reviewing the letter at their meeting Tuesday, council referred the issue to its Traffic Commission for further discussion.
