The monthly Healthy Flin Flon meeting was held on Monday at the Flin Flon Friendship Centre with about a dozen people in attendance. The luncheon was hosted by Christa McIntyre, the Health Promotions person for the NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority. There were three speakers in attendance with the first speaker being Marj McNeill from the Community Nurse Resource of the NOR-MAN RHA. McNeill spoke on the upcoming "Dance to the Beat of Your Own Drum" workshop which is slated for March 20 at the Flin Flon Community Hall. It will be co-hosted by the NOR-MAN RHA and the Canadian Cancer Society. The purpose of this particular workshop is to "provide an opportunity for workshop participants to use humour and music to maintain balance and improve their quality of life". The workshop is an all day affair. For more information you can call the CNRC at 687- 1340. The keynote speaker will be Monica Coneys who is a very inspiring and invigorating speaker, who started out in England, taught in India, and worked in Johannesburg, South Africa, for many years. Her expertise is in the area human relations and it is well worth coming to hear speak! The second guest speaker was Heather Todoschuk from the Flin Flon Parks and Recreation. Todoschuk gave everyone an insight into what is available in our community to keep us fit and active. There are swimming exercises (lap, adult and family swimming), badminton, cross country skiing, karate, kayaking classes, resistance training, muscles plus cardio training, skating, sliding, tae kwon do, volleyball, walking opportunities and yoga all available! There is definitely something for everyone. You just have to get off the couch, pick up the phone and find out where the activity that most interests you is taking place. The third speaker at the Healthy Flin Flon meeting was Shirley Spear from Anxiety Disorders of Manitoba. She came up from The Pas to speak on the upcoming Regional Mental Health Conference on Anxiety Disorders which will be held in The Pas on April 28th and 29th. This conference will be geared for children and seniors as well as those in between! Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental health problems. In as many as 10% to 25% of the population, they continue throughout a lifetime. The costs, both personally and for society, are innumerable such as in broken or stressful relationships, lost wages, decreased productivity, reduced quality of life and a frequent use of the health care system. Apparently, according to the Anxiety Disorders Association of Manitoba, the stresses and anxieties have been increasing in the past several years. Thus, the two day conference with some excellent speakers in the hope of trying to teach people how to recognize and cope with the stresses in their lives. One of the speakers will be Dr. John Walker, who is the director of the Anxiety Disorders Program at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg and who is also professor in the Department of Clinical Health Psychology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. He has developed the workbooks used with panic disorders and social anxiety disorders as well as being active in research and supervising clinical psychology students in their training. He has been recently appointed as president of the Anxiety Disorders Association of Canada. He works with children helping to identify anxiety problems. The second speaker will be Dr. Barry Campbell who is the Clinical Director of the Psycho Geriatric Program for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and is also director of the Memory Assessment Clinic. See 'Community' P.# Con't from P.# He deals with people in the first stages of dementia (Alzheimer's Disease) as well as their family members and caregivers. The third speaker will be Eleanor Spencer who is no stranger to our area. Ellie is the Regional Program Manager of Mental Health services in the Norman Region. She will provide information about accessing mental health care and the services in this region. The fourth speaker will be Linda Buchanan who is the Program Director of Rosaire House Addiction Centre in The Pas. Buchanan will provide information on the relationship between anxiety and addictions. There will also be a special reception held for local physicians to meet and interact with Dr. John Walker. March 8 - International Women's Day Luncheon at RJ's. Must pre-register, call 687-1340 by March 5. March 15 - Annual General Meeting of Environment Council. March 9 - General Parents Information Meeting re: "Party". This is for parents of grade 9 students regarding the workshop that the students will be attending regarding the effects of choosing to drink and drive. There will be a "mock" accident and the students will be taken through the entire process from the crash site through to the morgue. Some will also be expected to eat their lunch with some specific disability to let them know just for an hour what it must be like to for example, "have to be fed" or "taken to the bathroom". This workshop will be a full day and the parents have to sign a consent form. The parental informational meeting will be held Tuesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. in the hospital boardroom. Please be there! March 23 - is a play by Manitoba Theatre Centre being put on at the Flin Flon Community Hall entitled: "Tuesdays with Morrie", starting at 7:30 p.m. The next Healthy Flin Flon luncheon will be Monday, April 5 at the Flin Flon Friendship Centre.
