It’s that time of year when we all start to enjoy the sunny weather outside.
Soaking up the sun in summertime is well deserved after a winter of layering on snowsuits before heading out the door, and there’s no doubt spending time outdoors and on the land can make us feel happier and healthier.
On the flip side, too much exposure to sun can increase the risk of skin cancer. It is estimated that more than half of skin cancers can be prevented.
Luckily, we have effective ways of protecting ourselves from too much sun. Here are some things you can do:
1. Cover up with clothing. Long sleeved shirts, wide brimmed hats, and ultraviolet (UV) protective sunglasses can protect you from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays and keep you cool.
2. Seek shade. The sun’s rays are strongest from 11 am to 4 pm. Protect yourself if the UV index is three or higher.
3. Use sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays, and use SPF 30 or higher. Don’t hold back on putting on a lot of sunscreen; make sure to cover all areas of the body, and reapply regularly. Every two hours is a good rule of thumb.
Following these recommendations can help you to enjoy your summer and feel healthy, now and in the future.
