The NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority has allotted $86,300 for new equipment in Flin Flon during the 2003-04 fiscal year. The major purchases will include a new $26,000 birthing bed for the maternity/surgical department and a patient stretcher/scale for $10,500. Both items are for the Flin Flon General Hospital. Also approved for the hospital are three specialized patient beds ($19,000), an embosser for admitting medical cards ($8,700), two wheelchairs equipped with oxygen ($4,500), an IV pump for chemotherapy use ($4,400), and a non-invasive blood pressure monitor ($4,300). The funding also includes $6,700 for a new patient lift for the Northern Lights Manor and $2,200 for four wire linen laundry carts for the Personal Care Home. A request from the Snow Lake Health Centre for two acute care beds ($11,000) was also approved. Health authority officials approved the purchases after reviewing prioritized lists of required equipment from each department head in Flin Flon, The Pas and Snow Lake. Items that do not fit into the budget are placed on a list that is sent to area service clubs, which often donate items to the health authority. This year's 'wish list' of the staff at the Flin Flon General Hospital includes the following items: One birthing bed for the maternity/surgical department ($26,000). One prenatal monitor for the maternity/surgical department ($25,300). One trauma stretcher with scale for the emergency/special care unit ($18,200). One double steamer for the kitchen ($15,900) One microscope with polarized and general capabilities for the laboratory ($8,700). One day surgery stretcher for the maternity/surgical department ($7,500). One trauma stretcher for the maternity/surgical department ($7,200). One Hobart mixer/grinder for the kitchen ($6,300). One medication cart for the maternity/surgical department ($5,400). One scanning table for ultrasounds ($4,900). One tonometer, used to measure the pressure inside the eye, for the emergency/special care unit ($3,600). One Chattanooga Triton therapy table for the physiotherapy department ($3,500). Three oxygen saturation monitors for the emergency/special care unit (no cost provided). One ACL unit, used for bloodwork, for the laboratory (no cost provided). Meanwhile, the health authority has approved $155,700 for new equipment at The Pas Health Complex, including $39,100 for an IV pump and $24,300 for two defibrillators. Items on The Pas' wish list include a half-ton truck for maintenance purposes ($30,900) and a fetal monitor ($29,700).
