National Volunteer Week wraps up tomorrow. It's a time when the country pays special tribute to volunteers and the many hours of dedication they give to their communities. The Flin Flon Health Auxiliary is one team of volunteers deserving of the recognition. It was formed to raise money to buy equipment for the Flin Flon General Hospital and to volunteer at the hospital, Personal Care Home, and Northern Lights Manor. Providing thousands and thousands of dollars worth of invaluable equipment to the hospital requires plenty of fundraising, and auxiliary members are up to the task. One of their fundraisers is the sale of hand-knitted baby clothing on the fifth floor of the hospital. On display in a cabinet, the clothing includes bonnets, booties, and blankets. Members also visit the hospital wards once a week to sell numerous confections and articles, and to provide magazines and books for loan. As well, the auxiliary collects used books, which are sold at the Children's Book Mart in Winnipeg. Proceeds go to the Winnipeg Children's Hospital. They also work bingos, treat residents to a Christmastime tea and bake sale, and hold tag days. This year, the auxiliary has started holding meat draws at Raven's Roost Pub in Denare Beach, and on June 5 will host their first Trunk Sale on Manitoba Avenue, where car trunks full of secondhand items will be up for grabs. All of that fundraising is time-consuming, but members also find time for volunteer efforts, including overseeing Meals on Wheels, and hosting a potluck supper for Personal Care Home residents and a tea and social at the Northern Lights Manor. The auxiliary executive is made up of Kay Larsson, president; Joan Thorley, vice-president; Sheila Sproxton, secretary; and Della Chilson, treasurer. The Flin Flon Health Auxiliary consists of 26 members, and more are always welcome. Any women interested in joining may phone 687-7838 for more information.
