Hapnot Collegiate’s principal is moving on - and the school did not have to look far to find a replacement.
Members of the Flin Flon School Division (FFSD) board of trustees confirmed that current Hapnot vice-principal Jordy Dumenko would be the school's acting principal during the board’s Nov. 28 meeting, effective January 1, 2024. The move comes after current principal Steve Lytwyn announced to staff members late last month that he would be stepping down from the position, effective December 22.
Dumenko’s hire is, as of right now, not a permanent one. According to the measure approved by the FFSD board, Dumenko will hold the job officially until June 30, when the division can choose to extend his contract or to search for a new replacement. FFSD superintendent Tammy Ballantyne said the division decided to advertise the job as a term position due to the time of year, saying the division will file a job posting for a permanent principal for Hapnot this spring.
Dumenko first took over as Hapnot’s vice-principal in 2018 after years as a teacher within the FFSD, mainly at Hapnot and at Ruth Betts. Originally from the area and a graduate of Creighton Community School, Dumenko is also a member of the board for the Flin Flon Bombers, among other community groups.
The FFSD has posted a job listing for Dumenko’s current job as vice-principal - as of press time, the posting, which was advertised internally and online, had already closed.
Lytwyn won’t go too far or change fields - his next position is already known. The Flin Flon native, a current city councillor and the deputy mayor, will instead go to work for the Creighton School Division, where he will take over as the group’s director of education. The spot was formerly occupied by Vince Cable, who left the job earlier this year - former director of education and former FFSD superintendent Blaine Veitch has filled the job on an interim basis during this school year. Lytywyn will take over the position as of January 1.
“I am thankful for everything the Flin Flon School Division has given me, but excited for the new opportunity and role moving to Saskatchewan,” said Lytwyn in a statement to The Reminder.”
Lytwyn will still live in Flin Flon and will continue to serve on city council - he’ll also continue to coach Hapnot sports teams, including the school’s senior Kweens basketball team, despite no longer being on the school’s staff.
