Hapnot Collegiate’s junior volleyball squads took advantage of their spots at provincials last weekend, with both teams turning in strong performances.

The Kings played host for the provincial junior varsity A/AA provincial tournament, with the school’s gym effectively taken over with bumps, sets and spikes by 12 teams from across the province.

In the pool round, Hapnot would face the Hamiota Huskies, Major Pratt Trojans and St. Paul’s Barons. The Kings would lose their games against all three schools, despite winning sets against Hamiota and St. Paul’s and nearly completing a massive second set comeback against the Barons.

The Kings headed into the bracket in eighth place out of 12, facing the ninth-ranked Treherne Tigers. The Tigers and Kings played a tight game, with Hapnot winning the first set before narrowly losing the second and third sets. The Kings ended their campaign with a 25-23, 24-26, 11-15 loss. Treherne would later be eliminated by the top-seeded Rosenort Redhawks, who would go on to the provincial final before losing to eventual champs Gabrielle Roy.

The JV Kweens, playing their provincial tournament in Morris, met a similar fate. After going 0-3 through pool play against MacGregor, Carberry and Killarney, the Kweens entered the bracket in 12th place, facing the St. Paul’s Barons. The Kweens kept the game close, but ultimately lost 25-21, 25-18.

One more Hapnot volleyball team, the senior Kweens, still has a provincial tournament to play. The Kweens, who won the Zone 11 banner on their home court earlier this month, will head to MacGregor to play from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.

The senior varsity boys’ Frontier Collegiate Raiders, the newly minted Zone 11 champs, will head to provincials next weekend in Carberry.
