As usual, December was another busy month for Hapnot and Many Faces. As the successful season for our volleyball players ended, basketball began in what felt like the very next breath. The senior boys opened their season with two tournament wins in Creighton and Swan River. First-time Hapnot coach Andrea McCain took her JV girls to The Pas for a tournament where they gained valuable experience finishing off with a win. McCaig stated there was a substantial learning opportunity that the girls thrived in. There was better play every single game. The phys-ed staff took the Grade 11 and 12 phys-ed students to Asessippi Ski Resort for two and a half days. The 27 students were extremely excited to go and it was a great opportunity for them to try skiing or snowboarding for the first time. Chaperones Dan Dillon and Dale Wride accompanied the students. Many Faces hosted its annual feast for students and families. The teachers and staff prepared all of the food and it was excellent. Turkey and all the fixin's were served to 75 students, administrators, board members and student families. Santa made an appearance and handed out treat bags to the children. MLA Clarence Peterson was also in attendance and led the caroling with his own version of Jingle Bells. The Christmas season kicked off on Dec. 20 with the traditional Xmas Xcitement concert. The student council group and their teacher advisors organize the event. There is never a shortage of musical talent at Hapnot. Thunder Shaft was reunited as Stephano Strappazon returned home for the break to front the band. An acoustic group comprised of Grade 10 and 11 girls entertained the crowd. A number of video submissions were also included in the afternoon's entertainment. The finale of the concert was a newly formed band consisting of Callum Spencer, Tristan Simon, Eddie Gardner and singer Carrie Rutherford. There is no other word to describe them except awesome. The Red Hot Chili Pepper and Nirvana tunes were outstanding. We look forward to hearing more from this talented group of students. The end of December also brought the end of a career for a long-standing administrator. Principal Bill Pauley retired on Dec. 21 after 31 years in the education field. Students paid tribute to him at Xmas Xcitement, where he expressed his thanks for all of the kind words. The staff showed their appreciation at Pauley's retirement party earlier in the month. He will be missed but he is sure to be around the building for the occasional bridge game.
