May was another busy month at Hapnot Collegiate. Track and Field A small group traveled to The Pas to compete in track and field zones. Eleven of the 14 students who made the trip qualified for provincials. Notable showings were Riley Rachuk, who qualified in the 100m, 200m and long jump; Willey Eikel, who won first in high jump; Chase Pabianek, who placed third in 1500m and second in shot put; Christina Mckay, who placed second in javelin, second in shotput and second in 200m; and Nick Martin, who finished third in the multi event while placing second in javelin. Each of these students will be traveling to Winnipeg to compete at the provincial level. Jazz Night Jazz Night was held on May 22 this year to a receptive audience of 240 people. Jazz Night featured junior, intermediate and senior jazz bands as well as the Hapnot Choir. We also featured eight soloists or groups: Hanna Hvidsten, Evan Quick, Nicole Storey, Shannah Fisher, Kellie Beck, The Scruffy Muffins, Tieryn Steele and Mackenzie Grove. Many different styles of music were heard throughout the night. Emcee Colin Davis helped things run smoothly and even called upon his Sean Connery voice to help fill time when something was forgotten in the band room! Many community members came forward to help accompany our students. WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Kidnetic Energy Stephanie Kozar, a Hapnot grad, was in to do presentations to the Chemistry 30S, 40S and Biology 30S classes. The chemistry classesâ?? presentations were about post-secondary school â?? helpful hints and information about the University of Manitoba. In the biology class, Stephanie presented on the brain and the students reviewed the parts of the brain, participated in memory tests and dissected sheep brains. In the second class with the Biology 30S group, the students reviewed the parts of the hearts and lungs and dissected pig hearts. Muna Four Hapnot students had the chance to participate in Winnipegâ??s Model United Nations Assembly with fellow high school students from Canada and the United States. Sponsored by Flin Flonâ??s Rotary Club, Luke Holubec and Ben Wride represented South Korea while Shannah Fisher and Hanna Hvidsten acted for Myanmar. They prepared and presented speeches in front of the general assembly, debated amendments in committee meetings, networked and worked out alliances with other delegations and voted on general resolutions. See â??Resol...â?? on pg. Continued from pg. The girls managed to get a resolution passed on the floor as Myanmar, while the boys entered into MUNA legend with some unexpected offerings during roll call. It is a great opportunity for students to increase their global awareness on important issues. Skate Park Mural The 12-metre long Skate Board Park mural is mounted on the north-facing wall of the skate park. The mural is a collaboration between three grade levels of students from Hapnot Collegiate and Many Faces Education Centre. Winnipeg-based artist Cam Forbes came to Flin Flon with the express purpose of managing the creation of the mural. Hapnot received the Artist in the Schools grant from Manitoba Arts Council. It helped fund the project. The maintenance staff at the Flin Flon School Division where absolutely stellar in their support of the project, setting up the mural in the periodic spring blizzard conditions. The theme for the project was generated by the students. During art class the engaged and highly involved students had input into a creative web of ideas ranging from fierce strength to the four elements. A small group of Grade 10 students distilled the many ideas so that stencils could be created to reflect individual ideas. The three words BIKE RUN SKATE where chosen as a message of action for the park. The angled letters even look like they are moving. The project took a week to complete using stencils created earlier during the year. Students were so engaged with the project that when the power went off during slot five Thursday, almost all of them stayed to work on their finishing touches. This project is a testament to the perseverance, cooperation and enthusiasm that is so apparent in our students. PARTY Program All Grade 10 students attended the PARTY (Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth) Program during the month of May. Itâ??s a hard-hitting hospital-based program targeting high school students on taking responsibility for their lives. Students come face to face with the realities of high-risk behaviours such as drinking and driving. Emergency room physicians, nurses and ambulance attendants give firsthand experiences of the tragic consequences. Victims of these tragedies speak to the students and deliver a powerful message with assistance from Manitoba Brain Injury Association, Rehabilitation staff and numerous volunteers. The program demonstrates, through simulation, the conditions of injured individuals in the Emergency and Rehabilitation areas; and the physical and social challenges of individuals who are disabled as a result of risk-taking behaviour. It also provides an opportunity for students to follow the journey of a trauma patient from crash site through to hospitalization. PARTY provides students with positive alternatives and choices to risk-taking behaviours, and encourages teenagers to examine their own attitudes and behaviours concerning risk-taking behaviours. Grad The Grad Fashion Show was a success. We had a lot of people from the community turn out to watch the grads strut their stuff in fashions from local businesses. Everyone in the audience seemed to be having a great time and the graduates themselves enjoyed this last big fundraiser of the year. The graduates are very appreciative of the support from our area businesses who who let us borrow clothes, and also to the other businesses that donated prizes for the raffle. The graduates and the staff of Hapnot enjoyed a barbecue on the evening of May 28. This gives teachers and students an opportunity to chat about future plans and enjoy each otherâ??s company before the stress of exams and graduation sets in. It is an evening that teachers and students value. Graduation is just around the corner and it is hard to believe that it has snuck up so quickly. The convocation ceremonies are at the Whitney Forum starting at 6:45 p.m. and we welcome everyone to come watch the grads receive their diplomas. The Grad March down Main Street will begin at about 8:30 p.m. with the grads leaving the Whitney Forum at that time. Hiking Trip A group of students hiked 13 km down the West Arm Mine road and down the tracks out to Camp Whitney. They spent the night out there and hiked back. The Grade 11 and 12 students earned hours towards their phys-ed credit and enjoyed the activity with their peers. The group was supervised by James Dumenko and Alanna Simpson. â??
