Earlier in the month, teachers arrived at school to find hundreds of Kony2012 posters hanging all through the school. Two students, Courtney Howdle and Ainsley McIntosh, were moved enough by the viral YouTube video to bring awareness to Hapnot Collegiate regarding notorious villain Joseph Kony. Social Studies teacher Trent Tuttosi stated that he was moved by the activism shown by these two girls, and that they did it all on their own. If you are interested in learning more about Kony2012, the 30-minute video is on YouTube. * * * Over the past month, students from Ruth Betts Community School have made posters and picketed outside of the main doors here at Hapnot, protesting idling cars. The Grade 7 students wore white suits and face masks to signify the dire effects of pollution in the air. The gathering of students has reduced the pick-up and dropping off of students so far. Parents dropping of their son or daughter at Hapnot should do so in the student parking lot, not in front of the main doors. Three students from the Life Skills program will be going to the Victoria Inn to work in the kitchen, in housekeeping and in maintenance. They will work there two or three times per week starting in April and going until June. David Brooks and his staff at the hotel are providing this opportunity for students to develop their skills. The Visions and Ventures class raised just over $400 in their Grade 12 auction, with the money donated to the grad class. They were to run a second venture, a Basketball skills competition, on Mar. 21, raising and donating pledges for a chosen charity. The winning team of five got to donate all pledges collected toward their selected charity. * * * Congratulations to those students who participated in the Parkland/Norman Regional Honour Band March 8-10 in Dauphin! We had participants from Flin Flon in three of the four ensembles. The students learned a lot and had fun playing in a large ensemble with an expert director! Participants from Hapnot included: Intermediate Honour Band, directed by Darrin Olerking: Leanna Koop, Rebecca Kozar, Randi Webb, Alex Oliver and Kari Rutherford. Senior Honour Band, directed by Brent Campbell: Keenan Sattelberger. There were also students from Ruth Betts and Ecole McIsaac School who represented Flin Flin in the Junior Honour Band, directed by Kevin Doell: Erik Dubreuil; Anna Quick; Reece Blouin; Cassandra Porteous; Taylor Olynyk; Louis Morin; Myla Bridgeman-Forbes; Madison Mihalicz; Alaura Adams and Ariel Henderson. * * * Students who have a flair for writing and are considering making a career out of it are encouraged to attend the UCN Language Arts Festival on May 4 and 5 in The Pas. Workshop facilitators will help students develop their voice and technique. Featured presenters are renowned playwright/ novelist/ songwriter Thomson Highway and broadcaster and poet Rosanna Deerchild. If there is enough interest, we will take down a group of students for the festival. See Mrs. Garinger in room 206 for more information and to register. * * * HudBay tours are being offered again this semester. Students who have been on the plant tour last semester found it to be an eye-opening experience. Students must be 16 to go on company property, so if students are considering a trade/ technician or engineering occupation, please see Mrs. Garinger to register. * * * It was a victorious month for Hapnot athletes. The senior varsity boys basketball team won their zone banner, bringing the total up to eleven. They traveled to Thompson for provincials, winning the consolation final. Sam Kinsley was chosen as MVP for the tournament. The senior varsity girls lost in the zone final to Thompson and missed out on the wild-card entry. Hapnot wrestlers traveled to Winnipeg to compete in their provincial competition March 16 and 17. The girls won the provincial banner and the boys finished seventh of 19 teams. Kara Diakow, Sara Stringer, Kristina Mckay, Delaney McIntyre and Carrie Rutherford have the opportunity to travel to New Brunswick to compete in the national competition. Aaron Simon finished second in his class and Cody Quinn was victorious in his. Anyone finishing first or second in their class is eligible to travel to nationals. Great job wrestlers and good luck in New Brunswick. See 'Proud...' on pg. 11 Continued from pg. 7 Coaches Murray and Joanne Skeavington and Derek Abrahamson are very proud of their athletes. Congratulations go out to McKenzie Grove, who competed in nationals for cross-country skiing. McKenzie won her provincials for Saskatchewan in Shellbrook earlier this month, then traveled to Mt. St. Ann in Quebec to compete at the Haywood Nationals. Hapnot will be looking to McKenzie to anchor some of our track events later on this year. Badminton season is well underway with full teams for both junior and senior varsity. Track is right around the corner as well. Practices will begin shortly after spring break. We are looking to our Grade 9's to fill out our JV squads for zones in The Pas. The miner niners in the school are very keen athletically and we are happy to have them in the school. _ Submitted by Patty Korchinski, Anna Jardine, Lana Nagy and Corrie Pomarenski
