Grad update

Hapnot Collegiate’s Class of 2015 has chosen a valedictorian, a guest speaker and a couple of songs to celebrate to.

The valedictorian is Mackenzie Grove. There is no doubt that she’ll write a great speech.

The guest speaker is former Hapnot science teacher and current École McIsaac School vice-principal, George Trevor.

The grad song the class chose for the processional and their first dance is “Time of My Life” by David Cook. The song chosen for the recessional is “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson.

The grad committee has already planned the banquet dinner and has started meeting with decorators to discuss decorations, so planning for the big day is well underway.

The next fundraiser for grad is the Fashion Show, which will be held on May 14 in Hapnot’s gym starting at 7 pm. There will be a raffle and refreshments. We hope to see a lot of people there.

Musical success

A huge congratulations goes out to student Kari Rutherford for auditioning and being accepted into Brandon University School of Music for voice.

Another huge congratulations to student Mikylo Odut for making it into the Intermediate Provincial Honour Band.

Mikylo is the first Hapnot student to successfully audition for that honour in over 10 years. Mikylo is one of six students from outside of Winnipeg who will participate in this 70-piece band from April 30 to May 2 in Winnipeg.

And more success

Music teachers Anna Jardine and Kim Jones have known for years that Flin Flon students are some of the most musically talented students in the province.

Now other music professionals are realizing this as well.

Thirty-eight Flin Flon students travelled to Dauphin from March 12 to 14 to participate in the annual Parkland / NorMan Honour Band Festival.

Students from Hapnot played new music under conductor Anna Penno and Darren Oehlerking for two full days before showcasing the music at a concert on the third day.

Three scholarships to International Music camp are awarded to outstanding musicians (one per band) at the concert. Flin Flon students Mikylo Odut and Eve Cooper took home two out of the three scholarships.

Five Hapnot students were also recognized for their leadership and given recommendation letters by their conductors to audition for Provincial Honour band next year.

Congratulations to Nathan Whitbread, Mikylo Odut, Kari Rutherford, Anna Quick and Jayde Clendenning for receiving letters of recommendation.

Art show

The yearbook is slowly coming together with the theme of “days gone by.”

With the help of Gerry Clark, students are including tidbits of Hapnot’s past.

The NorVA Centre will host a joint art show for both Hapnot and Creighton high school students until April 22.

The show features work from both schools, including an eye mural that all Hapnot art students have collaborated on and created.

There will also be a show at Hapnot in the art and graphics room during the week of Jazz Night, so parents can cruise by before or during the concert.

Model UN

Students Heaven Graham, Abby Wiens, Henry Remple and Anna Quick will head to Winnipeg at the beginning of May to participate in the Rotary Club-funded Model United Nations Assembly.

Heaven and Abby will represent South Africa while Henry and Anna will represent Jordan.

These four students have already been busy preparing for their roles. As they must speak from the perspective of their assigned country, much research is required.

Beyond knowledge of their countries, delegates must thoroughly understand the assigned resolutions to which they will be speaking.

This year these resolutions include discussions on the situation in Iraq and Syria, moving toward a nuclear-weapon-free world, the Ebola epidemic and the consideration of a new International Economic Order.

Dinner Theatre

This year’s Hapnot Dinner Theatre production, performed in February, contained many “firsts” for directors and students alike.

Sympathy Jones: Super Secret Agent Musical marked the first production Hapnot has put on from a company called Playscripts.

We were excited to try something different and the first read-through brought out many laughs and unique opportunities for us.

This year was the first year that director Kim Jones decided to implement a full pit band. This added a whole other level of preparation and involved not only students, but community members as well.

Sympathy Jones featured 22 original songs, and directors were excited to showcase our amazing vocal talent.
