April was another busy month at Hapnot Collegiate and Many Faces Education Centre. 30-Hour Famine This year 36 students are raising funds and awareness for World Vision by participating in the 30-Hour Famine. Each student had to raise of minimum of $60 to be able to stay overnight at the school. This helped Hapnot to raise more than $2,000 to help bring food, and clean water to third world countries. At the school, students had video game tournaments, played games and sports in the gym, had movie marathons and a huge game of hide-n- seek in the dark. The students began to famine Thursday, May 3 at midnight and continued to fast until Saturday, May 4 at 6 a.m. Each participant received one juice box. At 6 a.m. all the participants were invited to eat a pancake breakfast before being sent home for some much-deserved rest. It was fun time for everyone involved and we look forward to taking part again next year. Italy Trip Ciao! On March 23, 21 students, two adult travellers and three chaperones hopped a plane to Italy for spring break. What a wonderful trip! Our tour covered three regions, Rome, Florence and Sorrento. What a wonderful trip! We gained a new perspective on the scope of history (thousands of years) by visiting places like the Roman Forum, the catacombs and Pompeii. Everyone increased their understanding of art and architecture, learning about the differences between Byzantine, Romanesque and Classical styles. No matter where we went, amazingly beautiful buildings, fountains and galleries provided eye-catching photo opportunities. Works by artists like Michaelangelo, Da Vinci, Caravaggio and Bottecelli were in front of us, not just in books or on websites. We walked everywhere, which really allowed us to see so much more: small courtyards, frescoes in back alleys and small piazzas _ good thing because we ate so well! We had a great variety of Italian food, not what we would have here, but what would be typical for citizens of the different regions we visited. Just about every meal surpassed the previous one. Our student travellers were fine ambassadors for our community and country. For many, this trip was their first experience leaving home for a different culture and they excelled in the adaptability required to experience a new culture; several are already thinking about where to go next. Chaperones Daniel Dillon, Libby Stoker-Lavelle and Sandra Garinger commend the travellers for their enthusiasm, openness and patience during the tour; it was a wonderful experience. Creative Writing Workshop Hapnot was very fortunate to be offered a creative writing workshop through the Manitoba Writers' Guild and the Manitoba Arts Council. Sixteen Hapnot students and one Creighton student took part in the all-day interactive workshop where they discussed many ways to get the creative juices flowing and created some writing pieces that were read out loud to the group. Donna Besel was the author who put on the workshop and she gave some great advice to the students, many of whom would like to get published one day. Grad The grad committee is very busy trying to make the annual Fashion Show a success. They are working with an '80s theme and writing a script that will be sure to have the audience laughing. We also have the band The Scruffy Muffins playing some favourite '80s tunes during the show. The various stores in Flin Flon have been gracious enough to let us borrow their merchandise once more in order to make this a great show, and thanks to the many prize donations we will once again have a raffle. We hope many members of the community will come out and see what our town has to offer for clothing and see what our students have to offer in entertainment. The fashion show takes place in the Hapnot gym tomorrow, May 9 at 7 p.m. Edmonton Hair Show Nine students from the Many Faces cosmetology class embarked on a field trip to Edmonton to attend the Allied Beauty Association hair show April 26-29. They spent a fun-filled, exhausting day at the hair show and experienced many new things. There were stylists from Australia, Milan, New York, the U.S. and many large centres in Canada. They were astounded by some of the new haircutting, hairstyling and colour trends for this year. They also had the opportunity to experience different techniques that were performed on them such as: gel nails and other nail technology, hair extensions,make-up application, exfoliation, pedicures and many other procedures. See 'Great' on pg. Continued from pg. It was a very positive and informative experience that the class enjoyed. Badminton It was another great showing at Zones for the Hapnot team. Though we didn't bring the banner back to Hapnot, the coming years are looking very promising in this sport. A total of 18 athletes traveled to compete in Thompson, where the winning Thompson team had 46 points while Hapnot had 39. A couple of matches here and there made all the difference. The zone is a combined junior and senior varsity effort which makes for a very exciting weekend of endless matches. Here are the results: SV Results Shahzad Lone (second, qualifies for provincials); Mackenzie Grove (first, qualifies for provincials); Amber Klause and Rebecca Krahn (second, qualify for provincials); Candace Whitford and Sierra Kopachinski lost in a tie break game to get out of their pool; Heaven Graham and Nick Martin's record of 2-2 did not advance them from their pool.
