Submitted by Hapnot Collegiate February: As always the month has just flown by at Hapnot Collegiate. Athletics, the arts and community involvement were the main focus for the month. Congratulations to Taylor Oliynyk, Esa Fernandes, Ariel Henderson and Joval Klasson, who won the zones in curling this weekend. They represented Hapnot at Provincials in Gladstone February 6-9. Congratulations to Nick Martin, Tayler Kittle, Ethan Anderson, Isaac Dufour-Jarvis, and Ralph Laliberty for a good curling season. They handily defeated the Joseph H. Kerr team from Snow Lake but were unable to defeat the MBCI team from The Pas in boys' competition. *** Grad is going to be here before we know it. A reminder for parents that grads receive their own ticket in their grad pack and are allowed to buy five more, but if you need extras you can get on the list for extras. When someone doesn't use all their tickets then they are open for others to buy them, but you have to contact Ms. Willetts at [email protected] to have your name added to the list. In other grad news, the grad class has voted for their songs, guest speaker and valedictorian. Grads had a two-week window in February to nominate people and songs for each category, and voting was on March 5. The guest speaker is Bill Pauley, former principal of Hapnot, McIsaac, Ruth Betts and Parkdale. The grad song is We Don't Have to Look Back Now by Puddle of Mudd; this is the song that will play when the grads walk into convocation and when they have their first dance. The song the grads exit the arena from after convocation will be Hall of Fame by The Script. Last but not least, the valedictorian is Luke Holubec. Luke won by a large margin and we know that he will give a great speech. We hope to see many members of the community at grad to watch our Grade 12s move into the next phase of their lives. *** The students of Hapnot made Dinner Theatre another success this year. We performed 'Peter Panic' on Feb. 13 and 14 to great and responsive audiences. Students had been preparing for these performances since September, as this was the first year that we offered Dinner Theatre for a course credit. Dinner Theatre was very student-run this year. Students designed the set, organized their own costumes, helped with choreography, hair and make-up, made the programs and helped with advertising. We spent nearly a week prior to the performances on the gym stage rehearsing, and doing sound and lighting checks with Wayde Lowe. These rehearsals are a big commitment for all involved, but the week is always filled with great memories and brings us closer as a 'Dinner Theatre family.' The performances went off without a hitch and students really brought their characters to life and gave a lot of energy in their singing and choreography. Their co-directors, Corinne Mathews, Val Strom, Natalie Milligan and Kim Jones, were all very proud of their efforts and great performances! We commend all of the staff, student volunteers and community members who helped to make Dinner Theatre very successful this year. We will wrap up the year with a wind-up party from 4-7 p.m. today, March 11. We will miss the Grade 12 students, some of whom have been in every Dinner Theatre performance since Grade 9 (Jesse Simms, Keenan Sattelberger and Tristan Barteski); some who emerged in grades 10 and 11 (Nicole Breedon, Evan Quick, Crystal Hiebert, Beverly Hiebert, Kayla Lau and Hailey Whitmore); and even one who emerged as a star in Grade 12 (Edward Gardner). We hope you all continue on with drama and seek out community theatre wherever you end up; they will be lucky to have you. We look forward to working with the remaining cast and newcomers next year! *** The Chicken Chef was buzzing with activity as students, staff and parents served up a spaghetti dinner _ a fundraiser for the Nicaragua Youth 'Voluntour' Group. Local bands Ukes Ahoy, The Scruffy Muffins, Imrianna Jones and the Hapnot Senior Jazz Band played for the two sittings of guests, and Shannah, Caitlin, Derek, Nicole and Janelle made sure everyone was well-fed and happy. Chelsea Russell and Mark Lucas did a great job coordinating and managing the evening, along with a number of parent volunteers, and Kim Jones kept the music flowing all night. A great event for a fantastic cause! From the Voluntour Group 2013 brochure: 'In Nicaragua we will volunteer in a building project [with Me to We]. We will attend leadership and social justice workshops and be able to reflect on what we have done. We will witness firsthand the impact of helping others and be able to bring it back to our own community.' _ By Patty Korchinski, Bobbi Willetts, Kim Jones and Tiffany Anderson
