September was a busy month at Hapnot Collegiate and Many Faces Education Centre. Athletics Queen's Park In case you haven't noticed, there is a lot of activity going on at Queen's Park, close to Hapnot. Along with the recent addition of the skate park, the school division has invested in developing an area that has been underutilized for years. Once the ground is leveled, a tennis court and basketball court will be constructed as well as a track and a soccer pitch. Eventually a sand court for volleyball will also be developed. This is an enormous opportunity for not only the Hapnot athletic program. Having facilities so close to our school will benefit all students and staff. We look forward to the completion of the grounds. Golf Hapnot golfers were off to a quick start this year, hosting the zone championship Sept. 14. The girls' team of Chelsea Post, Mackenzie Grove, Megan Yaworski, Amber Klause, Lana Leclair, Rebecca Krahn and Candice Whitford took the first banner of the year. The boys had some stiff competition from The Pas, who eventually won the banner. Willy Eikel posted an 84 to take the second spot for individual golfers. It was a great turnout and a great day for golf. Soccer Soccer players have a busy schedule participating in two tournaments and the zone championship in Thompson. In the first tourney of the year in Neepawa, the boys' teams cruised through the competition posting a 3-0 record, while the girls were faced with a short bench and tough opponents, dropping all three of their games. The Swan River tournament was equally challenging for our Kings and Kweens, with both teams coming home without a victory. The Hapnot Senior Kings and Kweens traveled to Thompson for their pre-zone tournament the weekend of Sept. 21. There were four teams competing for the title: Cross Lake, The Pas, Thompson and Flin Flon. After the round-robin play, the boys were in second overall and the girls in third place. The boys went on to play Thompson (who were in third after round-robin) in the semis, and won easily in two games. The girls played The Pas (who were in second after round-robin) and were victorious after three games, which took them to the finals against their long-time Thompson rivals. We lost the first game 25-14 but came back strong in the second to win 25-15. It all came down to the third and final game and the girls were determined and focused to win this title as defending champs. And win they did, 15-11! The boys' final had them playing The Pas, which was the one team that beat them in the round robin. Well, the boys were there to prove that they wouldn't be beaten twice by this team and won swiftly in two games straight. It was a great tournament for both teams being that these were their first games of the season! Around School Post Secondary Day was hosted throughout Hapnot on Sept. 26. Universities from Manitoba and Saskatchewan were in attendance along with colleges. Representatives from trades and the RCMP also held sessions for the students. This day is set aside to enable students to be exposed to academia and job options after high school. Grade 11s and 12s chose sessions to attend that they were most interested in. Undergrad awards night is Oct. 4 in the Hapnot gym. The night is to support our students who achieved honours and distinctions last school year. Come and support our students and enjoy coffee, dainties and pleasant company. See 'Students...' Pg. 12 Continued from Pg. 7 Grade 12 students are anxious to start planning graduation already. In September we were able to get our grad committee in place. The executive consists of president Nicole Breedon; vice-president Crystal Hiebert; and secretary, Beverly Hiebert. The committee has 12 students so far, but we are hoping to get a few more out. We meet every Tuesday at lunch. Of course all Grade 12 students are welcome to come out and help at each of the fundraisers that we will have this year. The more student involvement we have, the more successful our fundraisers are. Our first event will be the Grad Christmas Tea, which will take place on Dec. 1. We hope to see lots of community members come out for that as it is always a lot of fun. Explore Careers Rebecca Krahn and Crystal Hiebert will have the opportunity to explore careers in medicine and other sciences via a keynote lecture, interactive workshops and a panel discussion on Nov. 2 in Winnipeg. They will be attending the 2012 Discovery Day in Health Sciences at U of M. Every year The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame and TD fund this great opportunity. Choir The Hapnot Choir participated in an all-day workshop on Sept. 27 with the Creighton Community School Choir and clinician Marcia McLean. This was a great event full of singing and community-building. At Culture Days over the weekend, students were to perform the songs they learned. AFM The Addictions Foundation of Manitoba's youth counsellor, Amanda Link-Labarre, has resumed AFM programming and services within Hapnot and Many Faces for the new school year. Amanda is at Hapnot every Monday, and spends Tuesday mornings at Many Faces. She's in our school every week to help youth experiencing difficulties due to their own use or who are affected by someone else using alcohol, drugs or gambling. Culture Days Culture Days was to host two presentations at Hapnot and Many Faces. Last Friday morning was a viewing of Noah's Last Canoe, hosted by Doug Evans at Many Faces, and a video called Romance of the Fur Trade at the Hapnot Theatre in the afternoon. There was also a collection of pencil sketches by Manitoba artist Gerald Kuehl located at the NorVA Center. Students were to choose two of the three presentations to attend. Many Faces Many Faces hosted a Chili Night on Sept. 27. The chili was cooked by staff and served to students and their families. The athletic department at Many Faces took a group of students on a canoe trip this month up to Mikanagan Lake. They started the trip on White Lake, paddled up to Mikanagan creek then on to Mikanagan Lake. The weather was wonderful and a good time was had by all. Connected Hapnot is trying to become a more connected school. Recently we have launched a school Facebook page. Also in the near future, the school web page will be get a fresh new. look.
