Submitted by Patty Korchinski and Anna Jardine The end of the semester is already here and students were writing exams February 1 and 2. Teachers have today to prepare for the next semester. We have a unique technology opportunity today as Cam Mateika from Swan Valley School Division will be visiting. He will be presenting a piece on 21st Century Learning and how that looks from a technology point of view. Mateika is a leader in technology and has close ties with Microsoft. Teachers in Hapnot are making great technological strides to incorporate 21st Century learning in their classrooms, and Mateika will be a great resource to support that initiative. McIsaac is also hosting a seminar on autism. Dinner Theatre is coming up February 15 and 16. The production this year is called Jeckyl's Hydes. The play is about a character who drinks a potion that causes him to morph into an array of characters. Though it is not a musical this year, it is very, very humorous. This event is a grad fundraiser from which students at all grade levels benefit. Proceeds go towards their own grad in the near future. It is a great way to bring the students and staff together. Everyone helps to put on the production and that effort is reflected in the performance. Tickets can be purchased at Hapnot Collegiate. Enjoy the show. The Chemistry 30S class was fortunate enough to tour the assay lab at HBMS. They went in two groups and both enjoyed the tour. They learned how the rock is processed right from when it enters the lab. The students were also shown practical applications of chemistry and types of careers studying chemistry can lead to. It was purposeful information that is not available to the general public and the students felt this made for an excellent experience. Developments The Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) is a coalition of organizations involved in international developments that are committed to: respect, empowerment and self-determination for all peoples; development that protects the world's environment; and global understanding, cooperation and social justice. MCIC's mission as a coordinating structure is to promote public awareness of international issues, to foster member interaction, and to administer funds for international development. In December, MCIC recruited eight high school students with skills in music and/or other arts and an interest in social justice to create a music video for International Development Week 2012. Our very own Callum Spencer and Jayde Clendenning were among the eight chosen to participate in this project. They traveled to Winnipeg for two weekend sessions where they learned about issues related to girls and women in international development. They were part of a team that wrote and recorded an original song with an original music video to promote awareness on this issue. They had the opportunity to work with professional producers, musicians and sound technicians, as well as professional leaders for public engagement from MCIC. International Development Week is February 5-11 and we look forward to the message and inspiration that this project will bring to our school and our community! It's basketball season! Hapnot has four teams this year. The Senior Varsity boys travelled to St. Norbert, finishing third. Recently they won a tournament in Creighton, beating Hudson Bay in the final. The senior teams have the pre-zone in Thompson as well as two trips to Winnipeg planned. Hapnot is hosting senior varsity zones the weekend of March 2. Both the boys' and girls' team are favoured to bring home the banner; however, The Pas senior boys may have something to say about that, as will the R.D. Parker Trojan girls out of Thompson. It is sure to be an exciting weekend. The Junior Varsity boys recently won an invitational tournament hosted in Cranberry Portage. The girls did well, too, losing by one point to Cranberry, which had a solid team on the floor. Both teams will be travelling to The Pas for their zone February 25. The JV Kings are favoured to win the coveted Zone banner this year. Good luck to all teams. Quarter three starts at Many Faces Education Centre on February 6. Courses offered are Grade 10 geography, Grade 11 biology, Grade 12 English, Grade 12 math, Grade 10 basic hairstyling and Grade 12 family studies. Night school is also continuing with Grade 12 English being offered.
