The grad Fashion Show will be held on May 9 in the Hapnot gymnasium. The grads are very excited to show off clothes from our local businesses and put on a great show for the audience. Right now some of the students are writing a script so there will be a bit of a story that goes with the show. Let's wish them luck on finishing it and getting it ready in time. There will also be some entertainment between runway walks from some of our talented Grade 12 students who really know how to sing. As always, we will have a raffle with great prizes from local businesses, and we will be selling our grad chocolates. On behalf of the 2012 grads, we hope to see you in our audience on May 9. Environment The Grade 12 Environmental class had the opportunity to showcase some of their environmental knowledge with grade 1-3 students at Ruth Betts and McIsaac. Students set up booths that taught about topics such as night vision, composting and sorting out garbage, recycling, animal tracks, dying with nature, and wind power. Students who visited the booths seemed to really enjoy what each topic had to offer. The Hapnot students did us proud by showing their enthusiasm and being well-behaved throughout the day. The second trip is planned for grades 4-8 at both schools, once the warmer weather comes. The idea of this visit will be to teach environmental topics and issues by setting up games outside. Greener Mining Students Beverly Hiebert, Crystal Hiebert and Sandra Kritzer, and teacher Robyne Mansell, will participate in hands-on lab activities demonstrating issues with mine water pollution and the opportunities to use bacteria to remediate mining waste waters. This is taking place at McMaster University in Hamilton from May 20-25. There were very few schools selected to attend this workshop. The application process involved each student as well as the teacher writing a rationale as to why they want to attend. See 'Mor...' on pg. 12 Continued from pg. 7 They are all very excited for this amazing opportunity. 30-Hour Famine Every year we have students participate in World Vision's 30-Hour Famine, and this year was no exception. More than 30 students collected donations for World Vision to support their program of child protection. It helps prevent child trafficking and restores the childhoods of sexually exploited children and child-labourers in Cambodia and India. It also rehabilitates former child soldiers in Uganda. The participants began fasting on Thursday, April 12 at midnight and continued until Saturday, April 14 at 6 a.m. Students who raised at least $50 were allowed to sleep over in the school Friday night. While sleeping over, students watched movies and played games while raising funds and awareness for World Vision. It's A PARTY All Grade 10 students have or will attended the PARTY (Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth) program at the Flin Flon General Hospital on April 27 or May 4. Students experience a full-day session. They first observe a mock car crash and follow the path of an injury survivor, meeting the professionals who would care for them. Paramedics, ER physicians, nurses and therapists describe the painful journey of a trauma patient. Facts are presented about head and spinal cord injury, and the students get hands-on experience with the equipment and devices used in trauma care and during rehabilitation. PARTY is an injury-prevention program for teens, to help educate about the consequences of poor decision-making in relation to risk-taking behaviors such as drinking and driving; lack of seatbelt use; not wearing a helmet when on a quad; driving while distracted; and the dangers of alcohol and drugs. Peer Support Hapnot is happy to partner with the Flin Flon, Creighton and Area Suicide Prevention Committee, in bringing in two facilitators from Winnipeg's Teen Talk program. Students have been chosen to attend peer support training by their peers through a recent Teen Talk survey administered in our school. They were asked to identify who they felt they could talk to about issues they are experiencing. Participants in the peer support training program will receive skill training and information on specific concerns and resources. Knowing how to help and when and where to refer someone to a trained professional are important skills. Offensive Fouls Grades 7-12 students will get the opportunity to see the touring play Offensive Fouls, from the Manitoba Theatre for Young People and MPI. On May 2 this up close and personal look at love and racism will be performed for Hapnot students. The performance illuminates the obvious and not-so-obvious ways that racism affects our lives, using both humour and drama. Spring Feast BSSAP (Building Student Success with Aboriginal Parents) will be hosting its annual spring feast on Sunday, May 6 in the Ecole McIsaac School gym. Can You Write? Students who have a flair for writing and are considering making a career of it are encouraged to attend the UCN Language Arts Festival on May 4 and 5 in The Pas. Workshop facilitators will help students develop their voice and technique. Featured presenters are renowned playwright/ novelist/ songwriter Thomson Highway and broadcaster and poet Rosanna Deerchild. If there is enough interest, we will take down a group of students for the festival. See Mrs. Garinger in Room 206 for more information and to register. Sports A big congratulations goes out to Trevor Buick, who traveled east to Wrestling Nationals and finished an astonishing second. Great job, Trevor. Aaron Thompson and Kara Diakow also competed. These athletes are great representatives for Flin Flon and Hapnot. The badminton team competed in zone championships over the weekend with provincials this weekend. Good luck to those athletes. Track and field is in full swing now. Coaches are hoping to continue the winning ways of Hapnot at this meet. The team travels to The Pas at the end of the month. _ by Patty Korchinski, Bobbi Willetts, Mark Lucas, Robyne Mansell, Corrine Mathews and Jill Rideout
