Halloween is an exciting and fun time for children and their parents, however, it can be a stressful, and sometimes dangerous, time for pets ? especially those who are upset by door bells ringing, knocks at the door, screams and other loud noises. "Many pets become excited when someone is at the door," says Al Hickey, HSC Western Regional Director. "When there is a ring or knock every couple of minutes many animal companions become stressed. Keeping pets who are easily frightened or agitated in a safe, quiet room where they will be protected from the sights and sounds of Halloween will help your animal companions, and your two-legged family members cope with Halloween," he advises. Halloween Safety Tips for Pets 1. Try to keep pets in safe, quiet areas inside the house where they will not be affected by Halloween noises and activities. 2. Ensure that pets have effective identification. 3. Do not take pets trick-or-treating. If you must take them ensure that they are safely confined on a leash. 4. Do not dress pets in costumes. 5. Don't allow animal companions to eat any treats and educate children not to give candies to pets. 6. Don't let animals near candles and other dangerous items and decorations often around at Halloween. 7. Check on pets frequently to ensure that they are alright. 8. Pets suspected of ingesting a harmful substance should be immediately taken to a veterinarian. Have a safe and happy Halloween!
