Jonathon Naylor Editor A high-profile cyber attack allegedly launched from Denare Beach more than two years ago has led to a suspended sentence. Ryan Devin Lee, 21, has pleaded guilty to the unlawful use of a computer to commit an offence and committing mischief to data. Appearing in court in Creighton earlier this year, he was sentenced to a 20-month probation and 150 hours of community service. Lee was charged in 2010 for allegedly using a computer to disrupt an unnamed social networking site based in New York City. The website was the subject of a 'distributed denial of service attack' that effectively prevented all users from connecting to the site, police said. In June 2010, Creighton RCMP searched the accused's Denare Beach residence and seized software and several computers. They were assisted in their investigation by the RCMP Technological Crime Unit and the Canadian Consulate in New York City. Lee initially pled not guilty to the charges against him and granted CBC an interview in which he denied any involvement. The case was set to go to trial before Lee changed his mind and pleaded guilty to the two charges on which he was convicted. A third charge, possession of a device or instrument to commit a computer offence, was dropped. The terms of Lee's probation include an agreement that he not access any websites related to the complainant. Lee was no longer a Denare Beach resident at the time of his conviction, police said. The charges made headlines across Canada and beyond.
