Jonathon Naylor Editor Northern Manitoba has a new weapon in the battle to win over tourists. Tourism North Manitoba recently published a new edition of Nextstop, its travel guide for the vast region. The 128-page guide profiles northern communities and parks with articles, maps and dozens of colourful photos. Lois (Bunny) Burke of Community Futures Greenstone, a member of Tourism North Manitoba, said 10,000 copies of the booklet have been printed. She said this guide adds about six new communities over the previous edition. The booklet notes that Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach are home to "Bobby Clarke and dozens of other professional or National Hockey League players, [and] billions of pounds of zinc and copper, so far, with 20 years of proven reserves." The guide also touts the area's friendly people and shopping and recreational opportunities, such as the Joe Brain Children's Petting Zoo and the golf course. It calls Flin Flon "really three communities" when Creighton and Denare Beach are factored in. "The area also contains rural subdivisions around the shores of half a dozen regional lakes," reads the brochure. "The first parts of Flin Flon were build on extreme rocky outcrops, close to the mine. Sewer and water pipes had to be run in insulated wooden boxes and these boxes, where they ran reasonably flat, became the sidewalks." She noted that the plan is to produce Nextstop annually until all northern communities are profiled.
