A pro-life organization wants to erect a billboard sign along Highway 10A, but Flin Flon City Council has some misgivings about the proposed location. Flin Flon Pro-Life has requested permission to put up a billboard ? tentatively with the message "Life: what a beautiful choice" ? on the north side of the highway across from the parking lot entrance at Many Faces Education Centre. The group's Marilyn Jackson attended Tuesday's city council meeting to outline the proposal, saying the location is appealing due to the high traffic area. Coun. Dave Law said there is some concern about how a 20-ft. by 10-ft billboard might interfere with the sight line of residents, commenting, "that's a very, very large sign." He said the sign would also alter the look of what he considers "a very attractive" area of grassland that is owned by the City. Coun. Cal Huntley asked why the not-for-profit group doesn't rent an existing billboard, to which Jackson noted that it simply can't afford to do so. Despite the concerns, council has yet to make a final decision on the sign because not all of the councillors have had the opportunity to discuss the issue. Flin Flon Pro-Life will consider alternate locations if their first choice is turned down. The group hopes to put the sign up in May. The proposed sign, which would be made by a Saskatchewan company, is currently the focus of the group, which recommenced in the fall after a period of inactivity. Jackson said the sign would be a centrepiece of the group's mandate to educate the public on the abortion issue. "We're not in the business of changing people's minds if that's what they choose," said Jackson, "but we want to educate women because the majority of them don't know what's involved in having an abortion." The group plans a membership drive and awareness activities for Respect For Life Week in February.
