Green Street speeders a concern for residents

Two concerned Flin Flon residents asked city council for suggestions to reduce speeding on Green Street between the Joe Brain Petting Zoo and the perimeter highway.

Two concerned Flin Flon residents asked city council for suggestions to reduce speeding on Green Street between the Joe Brain Petting Zoo and the perimeter highway.

Lori Stevens and Tanisha Weseen presented their concerns to City of Flin Flon council during Tuesday’s regular meeting.

Stevens told council that vehicles often speed past her house in the 360 block of Green Street, going close to or over 80 km/h.

Councillor Leslie Beck suggested Stevens and Weseen contact the Flin Flon RCMP detachment for suggestions.

Weseen said there had been a conversation with RCMP years ago, but the police had been unable to commit to a solution with the manpower they had at the time.

Beck suggested the two revisit the current RCMP detachment.

“I don’t see them turning you down,” said Beck. “But see where they are coming from.”

Councillor Colleen McKee, who lives near the area, says she has noticed an increase of traffic since the closure of the bridge connecting Princess Boulevard and Queen Street.

Weseen also asked why there were no street lights in the area.

Administrator Mark Kolt said it came down to cost, estimating a cost of between $2,000 and $5,000 per light post.

Kolt recommend Weseen and Stevens write a letter to council, which would then be referred to the correct committees, regarding street lights and their concerns about speeding vehicles.
