Flin Flon City Council is ensuring that students at Many Faces Education Centre have safer access to their school. Council has voted to spread gravel along the south shoulder of Highway 10A near the school, leveling the ground and making it easier for students to access a nearby pedestrian-controlled crosswalk. The work is expected to be completed in the near future. The move comes in response to safety concerns from the school division, as some students have been taking the shortest route to their school by crossing at the parking lot entrance where there is no crosswalk. Concerns are heightened during the winter, when walking along the south shoulder is difficult due to the snow buildup. Superintendent of Schools Blaine Veitch called council's decision a step in the right direction but had some concern about whether the new gravel pathway would be kept clear of snow. The school division initially asked the City to install a sidewalk along the shoulder, but council declined in part because it did not know the long-term future of the former armoury, where Many Faces is based. Approximately 200 students and staff utilize the armoury, which is also home to the University College of the North and university program Campus Manitoba.
