Creighton School Board met on March 21 to discuss the grad committee, division calendar, budget, and travel club. The following are highlights from the meeting: Grad Committee Presentation Two student representatives made a presentation to the Board regarding the upcoming Creighton Community School graduation ceremonies which will take place on Friday, June 21. Mark Linnick and Marley Williamson formally invited the Board to attend their graduation ceremonies, and made a request of the Board to contribute to their chemical free graduation celebration. The Board is always honoured to attend the graduation ceremonies, and pleased to support the chemical free celebration which takes place after the formal ceremony. This year, as in past years, the Board will be contributing $5000 towards the celebration. Approval of Division Calendar The Board approved the Creighton School Division calendar for the 2013/2014 school year. Due to the Ministry requirements to increase the number of instructional hours to 950 hours per year for students in Grades 1-12, the length of the school day will be 5:15. Other highlights of the school calendar include two days for Teacher's Convention in October, and the traditional February break which will also be maintained. The approved calendar will be submitted to the Ministry for review and posted on the division website once this review is completed. Provincial Education Budget On Wednesday, March 20, the Saskatchewan government released a provincial budget, including funding for school division for the 2013/2014 school year. Unfortunately, this was not a good budget for Creighton School Division. With the implementation of the new funding model last year, a portion of our budget was considered transition funding _ $470,492. In next year's budget, that transition funding will be reduced to $211,631. While some portions of the budget were increased, the overall net impact is that the division will receive approximately $150,000 less in funding next year. See 'Exciting' on pg. 8 Continued from pg. The Board and administration will continue to work hard to minimize the impact of the reduction in funding on services to students. Travel Club On Saturday, March 23, 15 students and three teachers from Creighton Community School traveled to Spain over the spring break. The students and staff will be returning to school on Wednesday, April 3. This is an exciting cultural learning opportunity for the students. The Board wishes them a safe journey and acknowledges that these students are tremendous ambassadors for our school division while in Spain. The Board also wishes to thank teachers Stacey Becker, Ryan Gray, and Kathryn Drapak for helping to organize this trip, and taking their personal time to make this learning opportunity available to our students.
