Up to 50 social housing clients in northern Saskatchewan will have the opportunity to own the units they currently rent.

Saskatchewan Housing Corp. (SHC), a Crown corporation, will offer to sell social housing units to existing tenants who have higher incomes.

“Currently, in most northern communities, social housing tenants with higher incomes have limited or no private market options for homeownership,” read a Saskatchewan government news release. “Many are unable to move out of their rental units in order to make room for households with lower incomes.”

Only existing tenants will be eligible to purchase the units at what the province called a “fair value.”

No tenants will be forced to move should they choose not to purchase. SHC said it will reinvest proceeds from sales into additional housing for northern communities.

Creighton, Denare Beach, La Ronge and Air Ronge are not part of this initiative since there are already home ownership opportunities in those communities, the province said.
