If Mother Nature could have attended a recent evening at the R.H. Channing Auditorium, she would have smiled. A successful banquet and auction helped the Flin Flon and Area Ducks Unlimited celebrate its 30th anniversary. 'I think it shows that this community is active in wanting to conserve the wetlands,' said Margot Gray, chair of the event, reflecting on the milestone. The spring banquet and auction is the local Ducks Unlimited branch's signature event, having been held each year beginning in 1983. This year's installment, held April 20, drew about 160 guests, including several members of the original banquet organizing committee. It was a far higher turnout than the norm of recent years, a fact Gray attributes to the special anniversary. The banquet featured plenty of reminders of the cause being supported. Many of the dozens of auction items _Êfrom framed prints to sculptures _ carried a wildlife theme. Even when the turnout is lower, the banquet is always a lucrative fundraiser for Ducks Unlimited. Going back three decades, it has now generated, in very rough terms, $450,000. While Ducks Unlimited does not have projects specifically in Flin Flon, Grey noted its efforts benefit the country as a whole. That's especially true now with the organization focusing on watershed issues, she said. Grey has been involved with Ducks Unlimited for over 30 years, dating back to the time she lived in Winnipeg. 'I'm a huge animal lover and conservationist,' she noted. Not only is this year the 30th anniversary of Ducks Unlimited locally, it is also the 75th anniversary of Ducks Unlimited in Canada.
