Get your skis shined up: Centaloppet goes this Sunday

What an amazing season this has been for Flin Flon’s Ski Club. Good dumps of snow got us off to an early start, and the gradual build up since then – combined with hours of work by our volunteers – has led to the trails being in excellent shape.

What an amazing season this has been for Flin Flon’s Ski Club.

Good dumps of snow got us off to an early start, and the gradual build up since then – combined with hours of work by our volunteers – has led to the trails being in excellent shape.

The generally mild conditions have generated heavy traffic, with Moms and Tots on Fridays, Jack- and Bunny-rabbits on Saturdays, Junior Racers training several times a week and all sorts of folk out there on weekends and skiing evenings under the lights.

What we’re really looking forward to is seeing all these enthusiastic skiers show up this Sunday, March 6 for the 41st Annual Val and Ivor Hedman Centaloppet. This is a fun event for all the family and all local area skiers are welcome.

The start takes place on the Beaver Pond at 2 pm, then we ski an easy 3.4-km route that includes the ever-popular Valley Loop to the finish line at the chalet.

Admission is free, but we’d like all participants to register at the chalet basement between 1 and
1:30 pm.

Our generous supporters make it possible for us to offer prizes in a number of categories – such as largest family, happiest face and so on.

Last year, fancy-dress really caught on, with a gorilla winning the prize – and he was really steaming as he crossed the finish line!

When it’s all over, relax in the chalet and enjoy some of the delicious eats that will be on offer at the concession.

While this event is not a competition, there are always those folk who like to go a little bit faster than the next guy. These are the ones who’d like to see their names on the prestigious Centaloppet Cup.

Because of an ingenious handicapping formula, the Cup can go to anyone from adolescent to retiree. We’re hoping that there’s someone out there this year who’s up to toppling our current young champion, Caleb Baynton!

Last year, we had 81 participants, the most we’ve had since the early days, so we’re really hoping that this time around, we can top the 100 mark.

With that in mind, bring family and friends – and get the word out – let’s see if we can break a record!
