Get ready for faster data speeds

Flin Flon area residents will be able to tap into the full capacity of their smartphones as MTS Allstream prepares to launch local LTE service.

Flin Flon area residents will be able to tap into the full capacity of their smartphones as MTS Allstream prepares to launch local LTE service.

Though the telecommunications provider has no firm start date, its 4G LTE wireless network is set to come to Flin Flon in the coming months.

“Higher data speeds would be great,” said area resident and smartphone user Travis Fehr. “Sometimes I can’t even get on the Internet because nothing would load.”

Chelsea Ross, manager of corporate communications for MTS Allstream, said the 4G LTE service will offer data speeds up to seven times faster than the existing HSPA-plus technology.

“With download speeds of up to 150 Mbps [megabits per second], this network gives devices the power to stream movies and download music, pictures and apps faster than ever before,” she said, “to play multi-player games and to quickly access emails and business documents.”

Notify media

Ross said she would notify local media as soon as a launch date is determined.

Fehr is among the residents eagerly awaiting the announcement.

“When I go to Winnipeg, it actually makes a huge difference in the way my phone works,” he said.

In preparation for LTE service, MTS Allstream conducted work overnight Tuesday, temporarily leaving HSPA wireless customers in the Flin Flon area without service.

Ross said the service was out from about 1:30 am until 9:40 am on Wednesday. CDMA wireless customers were not affected.
