Summer unofficially kicks off in the Flin Flon area this Sunday with the Bakers Narrows Day festivities. The Flin Flon Lions Club invites all residents to come out to the park at Bakers Narrows to enjoy the latest installment of the long-running family tradition. "It will be a good chance to just shake off the weather and enjoy a good day of friendship," said chairman Alan French. The fun will get underway at 10 a.m. with a complimentary pancake breakfast, with an interdenominational church service following an hour later. At noon it's the first cast into nearby Lake Athapap to kick off the Month Long Fishing Derby, a popular staple of the festival, by reigning Queen Mermaid Brittany Brown. That will lead into opening remarks from MP Bev Desjarlais, MLA Gerard Jennissen, Flin Flon Mayor Dennis Ballard, and Creighton Mayor Bruce Fidler, among other dignitaries. Entertainment will include an introduction to this year's Queen Mermaid contestants as well as performances by local hoop dancers and the Flin Flon Community Marching Band. See 'Games' P.# Con't from P.# Some friendly rivalries are sure to be born with competitions like arm wrestling, horseshoes, and a tug-of-war. For the younger set, children's games will be organized by the Flin Flon Friendship Centre. Coinciding with Bakers Narrows Day will be the Second Annual Canoe Challenge on Lake Athapap, with proceeds going toward the purchase of a new seniors' Handivan. The afternoon will wind down with the Bakers Narrows Day draw at 4 o'clock. The top prize? A $1,299 diamond ring. Of course plenty of refreshments and treats will be available to quench the hunger and thirst of the hundreds of people expected to turn out. To help make the trip to the park a bit easier, the Lions will run the Handivan along Highway 10 to pick up people who had to park further away than they would have preferred. This is the third year the Lions have organized Bakers Narrows Day, having taken over the event from the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce in 2002. "It's been a good project. It's a lot of work. It gets all the members out because it's a function that has to be a total club effort," commented French. French said a few bands have unfortunately backed out of performing and he invites musicians to come out and share their talents. Anyone interested may call Alan at 687-8353.
