The Flin Flon General Hospital welcomed back one of its general practitioner surgeons this week, meaning patients who require emergency surgery no longer have to be transported to The Pas. The hospital had been without a general practitioner surgeon for two weeks prior to the return of one of the two physicians on Tuesday. The situation arose when one of the surgeons took holidays while at the same time the other surgeon required surgery himself. During the two-week period, three patients had to be transferred from Flin Flon to The Pas to receive their required treatment. Barbara Dreher, executive director of clinical services for the NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority, said two of those patients would have had to be transferred regardless. She said the surgeries went fine and that the health authority is pleased to have general practitioner surgeon services in place in Flin Flon once again. Patients who required emergency surgery outside of the obstetrical department were not impacted by the situation, as Dr. Martha Relling of the Flin Flon Clinic has the privileges to perform Caesarean sections. The health authority had tried to locate another general practitioner surgeon to be in Flin Flon during the two-week period but was unsuccessful.
