The cost of gassing up in the Flin Flon-Creighton area has come down nearly five per cent in recent weeks. The average price of regular fuel stood at 93 cents a litre yesterday, a drop of 4.4 cents over three weeks ago. Prices at the nine regular gas providers in Flin Flon, Creighton, and Denare Beach ranged from 91.9 cents to the most common price of 93.9 cents. On May 27, the average price stood at 97.4 cents per litre, with prices ranging from 95.9 cents to 97.9 cents. Some businesses that rely heavily on gas have felt an impact, including Northern Bus Lines, whose manager Reg Hiebert recently told The Reminder that the prices have taken away his profitability. Prices at pumps across Canada remain higher than what motorists are accustomed to, but Prime Minister Paul Martin believes that is about to change. The Prime Minister said last week's unanimous vote by the United Nations Security Council to restore Iraq's sovereignty would help lower oil prices over the summer months. "I don't know by how much," he told reporters. "That's what gas prices do. There is no expert out there who can guarantee you what gas prices will do. All you can do is take a look at what traditional trends are and what demand is." Crude oil prices rose to records this month amid concerns about the potential for terrorist strikes and other violence in Iraq and the Middle East.
