In May, Willow Park Curling Club members voted to amalgamate their club with the Uptown Curling Club for the upcoming season. Over the past few weeks, the executives of both clubs have met to try to formulate a plan for the new season. Following those meetings, a member of the Willow Park club who wished to remain anonymous wrote and submitted the following letter to the media: "As a result of the membership vote taken at Willow Park's annual meeting, 60 per cent of the membership that voted decided that in the interests of pursuing a new curling facility in the Flin Flon area, it made the most sense to curl the upcoming season at the Uptown curling rink. It is hoped that the funding for the Communityplex will be in place late this summer or early fall, and that by joining operations it will allow both clubs time to formulate a plan to amalgamate as one club prior to moving to a new facility. At the present time, the Willow Park facility would require an estimated $25,000 in repairs in order to curl there this winter. The present estimate to keep the facility available for curling if needed for the 2005/2006 curling season is $7,500 (upkeep for an empty building). With the goal of moving to a new facility, it is felt that the club should not spend its money on the aging facility, when the money could be better spent funding a new facility. It is expected that the semi-annual meeting will be held in the fall to decide whether the club is prepared to spend the estimated $7,500 to keep the club viable over the course of the winter. See 'General' P.# Con't from P.# The executives of the clubs decided that for the upcoming season, they would operate the Uptown facility jointly and formulated several committees made up of members of the Willow Park executive, the Uptown executive and the Ladies Uptown executive. The executives have set a goal of having a joint semi-annual meeting and registration on September 8, 2004, that will be advertised as the date becomes closer. It is hoped that curling can begin Monday, October 4, 2004 with the men curling on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays and the women on Mondays and/or Wednesdays. Mixed curling is expected to have two draws on Friday nights. The Hot Stove League would run on Mondays and Wednesdays and the Afternoon Ladies on Tuesdays and Thursday. The joint executives are excited about the upcoming season which will be the 75th anniversary of curling in the Flin Flon/Creighton area. Should you have any questions please contact your club president or vice-president. We look forward to seeing you in the fall!" Petition It seems that not all Willow Park curlers are as anxious to amalgamate until the proposed Communityplex, which would include a curling rink, has started to be constructed. There are some members at Willow Park who feel that May's vote should be rescinded because only half the members voted. Some members of Willow Park want the money that they have in the bank to be put back into their rink until such a time when the Communityplex is an absolute certainty. Thus a petition was circulated around town and a letter sent to the Willow Park president Bev Lantz requesting a special general meeting be called. Lantz has called a special general meeting to be held at Willow Park on Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at 7 p.m. This will be the Willow Park curlers' last chance to speak about the subject. If you have something to say or some suggestions to offer, you are encouraged to attend.
