They knew that after tonight, their lives would never be the same. They knew that an uncertain world awaited, that serious decisions would overtake their relatively carefree existence. But those were realities to worry about tomorrow. This evening was about celebration. This was their moment to shine. Sixty-one Hapnot Collegiate graduates donned a cap and gown at the Whitney Forum last Thursday, June 27, culminating four years of hard work and dedication. 'For a lot of us, the future is quite ambiguous,' valedictorian Luke Holubec told the graduates. In a humour-laced address that quoted Aristotle and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Holubec urged persistence in the face of adversity. When obstacles surface in life, he said, 'you keep pushing.' While high school brings challenges of its own, Holubec said the grads should look back on their time at Hapnot and 'remember how awesome it was.' Guest speaker Bill Pauley, a former Hapnot principal, conveyed how proud he was of each of the graduates. 'You're all great students and I've seen you grow,' he said, adding that in many ways he feels 'like a proud grandpa.' Pauley delved into the realm of life advice, promising the young men and women that what makes them happy will not necessarily be what pays the most money. 'Make a difference when you can,' he added. Several hundred parents, relatives, siblings and friends took in the ceremony, held in the rink section of the arena. Some parents beamed with pride while others dabbed away a tear or two as large paper balloons _ in the Hapnot colours of red, black and white _ hung overhead. It was a particularly memorable night for graduate Beverly Hiebert, who received no fewer than six awards and scholarships. Most impressive was her $20,000 University of Saskatchewan Chancellors' Scholarship. Hiebert also picked up the coveted Hudbay W.A. Green Bursary, worth $3,500 per year for up to four years of post-secondary study. Not surprisingly, she also earned the Governor General's Bronze Medal for having the highest Grade 12 average among all Hapnot graduates.
