Creighton’s Community Policing Board is receiving funding to help better fulfill its mandate.
Creighton town council voted last week to pass along to the CPB $5,000 from the RCMP’s National Aboriginal Policing Services Branch.
“We’re just the middle man,” noted Mayor Bruce Fidler, as the cash is coming from the RCMP, not local taxpayers.
Fidler said the CPB will decide how to spend the money, but possibilities include honorariums for board members and additional training.
The funding is part of a RCMP pilot project, involving several CPBs in different communities, to help the boards retain members.
The pilot project will run until the end of March 2014.
Creighton’s CPB will accept the funding at their next meeting.
The CPB is made up of nine members, including one student from Creighton Community School.
The members are Jeff Stuckless; Karen Oystryk; Neal Andrusiak; Carol Sutherland; Donna Jamieson; student Brad Fox; Joy Capyk; Jim Johnson; and Brian Rogers.
The CPB helps ensure public input into the policing of Creighton and Denare Beach.
Other highlights from town council’s Dec. 11 meeting:
• Council agreed to send a letter to the Town of La Ronge to request a meeting with them at the SUMA (Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association) convention “to discuss policing costs for towns in Northern Saskatchewan,” read the motion.
• Another motion came from council to accept a letter from foreman Ryan Johnsgaard, which stated he no longer “wishes to act as senior qualified foreman.”
Council agreed on the motion and “arrangements will be made with another public works employee to assume the position, if required.”
• Council approved the town’s holiday hours for next week.
In addition to hours already set, the town hall and Creighton Recreation buildings will be closed on Dec. 27 “due to the way the statutory holidays are scheduled,” read the motion.
In addition to the offices being closed, all employees will be required to take either a holiday or a TIL for the one day.
• Council approved a motion that there will be only one council meeting in December, as the second scheduled meeting would fall on Christmas Day.
