The Northern Neighbours Foundation is taking applications for funding, bringing tens of thousands of dollars within reach for northern charities.

Northern Neighbours expects around $80,000 to be made available between contributions from Winnipeg-based Moffat Foundation and the group’s own local funds.

Grants will be open to non-profit groups, registered athletic associations and municipalities in Flin Flon and across northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Groups in Denare Beach, Creighton, Cranberry Portage, Sherridon and Snow Lake are eligible.

Norman Community Services (NCS) has received funding for projects through the program and expects to file another application this winter.

“We have benefited from them,” said Shelley Andres, executive director of NCS.

Last year, NCS received around $5,000 in grant money to renovate the bathroom of a group home the organization owns and operates on Boam Street.

“It was a full renovation – walls came down, cleaned it up, new paint job, new flooring, paneling, tub, toilet, sink, everything.”

Andres said the work was done to help the home’s residents, who are pleased with the results.

“It’s made the men very happy there,” she said.

This year, Andres will file an application for re-shingling the house’s roof.

The deadline for applications will be Feb. 15, bumped up a month from last year’s March 15 deadline.

“We have a deadline on when we need to have the applications sent in to the Moffat Foundation. It takes a long time to go through all the applications and go through which ones we need to forward,” said Jane Robillard, chairwoman of the Northern Neighbours Foundation.

Grant applications can be found at the Flin Flon Public Library or on the Northern Neighbours Foundation website. Projects receiving funds will be chosen later this spring, with fund distribution coming this June.
