Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The Copper Fair, held at the Creighton Sportex, featured many new talented artists as photography, paintings, needlework and woodworking were on display last weekend. While the art show displayed the talents of well known artists in the community, it was also a forum for many new faces. "I enjoyed that the people new to the art community could have their art displayed and the public could come out and view it," said Channa Senyk, one of the organizers. With 116 entries in the art show, pieces of work were judged with winners announced at a gala held Thursday evening. Complete with wine, cheese, crackers and grapes, the gala was open to participants, volunteers and sponsors, with ribbons, certificates and prizes awarded. Best in Show went to Linda Hinzman, who cross-stitched a piece entitled Majestic Eagle. Roughly 50 people attended the event, which also offered a sneak preview to the art show. "The winners didn't know (they had won) until their names were called," said Senyk. Following the awards, those in attendance were able to tour the show with their glass of wine. Over the course of Friday evening and Saturday, all residents were encouraged to visit the Copper Fair to see the showcased artists. Favourite piece They were invited to vote on their favourite piece. Though not everyone voted, roughly 300 votes were cast, earning Courtney Whitmore's photograph, Lilies, a People's Choice Award. The Copper Fair divided the Sportex in half, with the art show on one side and home businesses set up on the other. Those looking at the artwork were then able to walk over and browse businesses selling items such as fudge and brittle, artwork, quilting, sewing and woodworking, rock painting and baking, to name a few. The Copper Fair, which graces the Sportex once every three years, received a good response from those who attended as positive comments on the new artists were prevalent. "We like the youth events, it encouraged the young person out there," said Senyk. "It's all about getting new people doing new creativity." Work featured All the work featured at the Copper Fair came from the Creighton area with the furthest entry from Cranberry Portage. For the next Copper Fair, Senyk says a few changes will be made, including the judging. "We're looking at...doing away with the juried art and just having a display. Then we would just do a People's Choice," she said. With only a display of art, Senyk says residents would be able to vote for their favourite pieces. There were "mixed feelings" with the juried art show this year, she says. "...some people would put up their display but didn't want it to be judged. It won't be juried anymore," said Senyk. "It will just be more pleasure." Seeing some of the critiques of the artwork, Senyk assured that the comments were supportive. All in all, Senyk says the Copper Fair was once again successful. "There was so much beautiful artwork that we were sorry everyone couldn't be a winner," she says. "There is so much talent in our community."
