Jonathon Naylor Editor Incumbent Clayton Sewap is facing three challengers in his bid to again represent Denare Beach on the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation council. Also on the ballot for the April 14 election are Marie Gunville, Tommy McDermott and Claudette Sewap. The winner will become part of the larger PBCN council that governs the band's eight communities and 9,000-plus members. One Chief and 14 councillors will be elected. The campaign for Chief is a five-way race that includes incumbent Darrell McCallum, former Creighton MLA Joan Beatty, Richard Highway, Harold Linklater and Roland Natewayes. Seeking re-election All five Pelican Narrows representatives Ð Wesley Custer, Arthur Dorion, Melville Linklater, Ovide Michel and Darwin Morin Ð are seeking re-election. But it's a crowded race that includes 19 other candidates: Louis Ballantyne; Russell Ballantyne; Alphonse Dorion; Francis Highway; Eileen Linklater; Thomas Linklater; Brian McCallum; Emil McCallum; Angela Merasty; Brent Merasty; Chris Merasty; Glenda Merasty; Curtis Michel; George Michel; Mary Jane Michel; Henry Morin; Theresa Morin; Angus Sewap; and Larry Sewap. Thirteen challengers Harvey Natewayes and Joanne Ray hope to return as the Sandy Bay representatives, but they also face a bevy of challengers. Thirteen candidates are vying for their positions: Cindy Ballantyne; Roland Ballantyne; Michelle Ballantyne-McDonald; Gertrude Bear; Ovide Bear; David Caribou; Marceline Charlette; Thomas Merasty; Ronald Morin; Clifford Ray; Peter Ray; Phillip Ray; and Robert Ray. Peter Beatty and Steven Custer hope to return as the councillors for Deschambault Lake. They face eight challengers: Allan Ballantyne; Cornelius Ballantyne; David Ballantyne; Jane Ballantyne; Walter Ballantyne; Adam Eninew; Bernice Sewap; and Katie Sewap. Competing to represent Sturgeon Landing are incumbent Gertie Budd and her lone challenger, Florence McKay. In Southend / Kinoosao, Darrin Morin and Victor Jobb are seeking re-election against Clarence Clarke and Kevin Morin. Finally, George Michel hopes to return as urban councillor but is up against Ralph Dorion, Kenny McCallum, Joe McKay and Randy Sewap.
