Former mayor Gordon Mitchell will join some distinguished company this weekend when his picture is added to the Flin Flon Station Museum Wall of Honour. And no one is more deserving of the honour, in the view of museum secretary-treasurer Lois (Bunny) Burke. "Gord has been on almost every board in the community," she said. Mitchell will become the tenth person or family added to the Wall of Honour, located on the far back wall of the museum. His list of contributions would be hard for anyone to match. Aside from his two terms as mayor starting in 1986, Mitchell has served on the board or executive of the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce, NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority, Flin Flon Bombers, Channing Home and School Association, and Flin Flon Air Board, among others. He remains active with a number of groups, most notably the Flin Flon School Board, to which he was elected in 2002. The Wall features a who's who of men and women who greatly benefitted Flin Flon: Del Baird; Joseph Brain; Mary Scott Edwards (Ma) Crerar; Thomas Dodds; Frank Herbert Gunston; Francis Lawrence (Bud) Jobin; Red MacIntosh; Eileen Munro; and Lorna Rogan. Each year, the museum board reviews a list of people to be considered for the honour ? by no means a small task in a community like Flin Flon. Successful candidates must be deemed to have made exceptional contributions to the community. "It's not something we just do on a whim," said Burke. The public is invited to Mitchell's induction at the museum this Saturday at 2 p.m. The ceremony coincides with the museum's open house.
