A one-time Flin Flonner and former Grand Chief of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation is seeking the Liberal MP nomination for Northern Saskatchewan. Gary Merasty announced this week he hopes to represent the Grits in the riding of Desneth-Missinippi-Churchill River, which includes Creighton and Denare Beach, in the upcoming election. "Serving as a northern leader, I believe I forged partnerships and friendships for the improvement of the people of the North," he said in a press statement. "I want to ensure northern issues are on the national agenda." Merasty is a member of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and served as Grand Chief from 1999 to 2005. A former junior hockey league player, he spent three years with HBMS. He graduated from high school in Pelican Narrows. A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan's Indian Teacher Education Program in 1991 and Masters of Education graduate in 2003, Merasty said he would work tirelessly on behalf of he residents of Northern Saskatchewan. Among other duties, he currently serves as chairman for both the Prince Albert Development Corporation and West Wind Aviation Limited Partnership. Merasty has received the Queen's Golden Jubilee medal and the Saskatchewan Centennial medal for his work. The Liberal nomination for Desneth-Missinippi-Churchill River is scheduled for tonight in La Ronge.
